On the same school complex Monday afternoon, the Westhill baseball and softball teams would top Marcellus – 5-4 on the baseball side, 10-1 on the softball side. In baseball, Westhill jumped on Marcellus pitcher Jordan Smith for four runs in the first inning, then another run in the second to make it 5-0, it looked to be over early. Kevin McAvoy earned two RBIs, while Dan Karleski earned two hits and scored a pair of runs. Mike McMullen also had two hits as Len Graf and Jake Rush drove in one run apiece. But Smith settled down, blanked the Warriors the rest of the way and earned seven strikeouts, giving Marcellus all kinds of time to rally. With a run in the third, then three more runs in the fourth and fifth innings (Adam Breuer and Phil Zdanowski earning RBIs), the Mustangs pulled within one, forcing McAvoy to relieve McMullen. In 2 2/3 innings, McAvoy struck out four and didn’t allow a hit to keep his team in front. On the softball side, Westhill was down 1-0 after Marcellus got on the board in the top of the first. The Warriors waited to respond until the bottom of the second, when it tagged Molly MacLachlan for four runs. As if that wasn’t enough, the Warriors added three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. Kelly Mascari led the charge, smacking a home run and double and finishing with five RBIs as Courtney Morgan scored twice and drove in two runs. Toni Secreti, Mary Bailey and Erica LoBello each had one RBI as Secreti, pitching the whole way, gave up just five hits while striking out eight.
