Steaming from a pair of one-goal defeats at home to Skaneateles and CBA, the Marcellus girls lacrosse team went to the road — and won twice. Of the two games, the trip to LaFayette last Tuesday offered more of a challenge, due to the cold temperatures and the Lancers’ vast improvement. Still, Marcellus came out on top, 14-10, building its margin in the first half as it claimed a 9-5 lead. The chilly conditions led the Mustangs to be cautious in the second half, matching LaFayette’s production. Nora Barry again led the way, with five goals and two assists. Erin Walter and Leea Sinay each found the net twice, with Meghan Connors getting a goal and three assists. Andrea Burrows, Kelly Welch, Molly McGuane and Ellen Brooks got single goals.
The Mustangs displayed even more offense in Thursday night’s 22-8 destruction of Bishop Ludden, getting 13 goals in the first half alone and continuing to convert at will even after the running clock of a double-digit margin. Sinay, with five goals and one assist, and Barry, with four goals and two assists, both picked up six points, but Connors outdid them with six assists to go with her pair of goals. Catherine Nolan and Nicole Nolan both finished with three-goal hat tricks, while Walter got two goals and one assist. Welch, Burrows and Brooks got single goals. For Ludden, Lauren Roy had three goals, with Mary Ritchie and Brenna Kincaid each finding the net twice. Erannan Shattuck had one goal and one assist as Kat O’Hara earned three assists. On the boys side, Marcellus earned a split, starting last Tuesday with an 18-2 romp over Manlius-Pebble Hill where it blanked the Trojans after the first quarter and used seven unanswered goals in the second period to get away. Matt McCaffer, with five goals and one assist, led the way as Tyler Tomeny picked up four goals. Carmen Brienza contributed three goals and one assist, with R.J. Linder, Greg Ramsden and Steve Brissette producing two goals apiece. Luke McNaney and Tom Glose each got two assists as Dalton Wenzel and Tom McNaney earned single assists. Things turned around on Thursday night, when the Mustangs could not keep up with defending Section III Class C champion LaFayette in a 16-9 defeat. Unable to win many face-offs in the first half, Marcellus watched as the Lancers used steady offensive production to build a 10-3 margin. All the Mustangs could do the rest of the way was keep pace, unable to inch much closer. Brienza, in defeat, delivered five goals, often fed by McCaffer, who had four assists to go with his lone tally. Wenzel, Luke McNaney and Tyler Tomeny had the other goals, with Ramsden getting a pair of assists. Miles Thompson led LaFayete with five goals and three assists. As the Marcellus boys meet Bishop Ludden and Tully next week, the girls Mustangs go to Onondaga, then are back home for its own look at Tully.
