In the midst of a stretch of three games in five days, the Westhill girls lacrosse team nearly got the big win it needed to turn a frustrating season around. At home to face undefeated Christian Brothers Academy on Wednesday afternoon, the Warriors saw four different leads disappear in the second half and took yet another close loss, this one by a score of 13-12. Right from the time Westhill erased a 2-0 deficit with three straight goals — two by Emily Haggerty, one by Brenna Rainone — the game was a tight battle that featured eight different ties and no separation whatsoever. Whatever Haggerty, Rainone or Caroline Buonocore would produce, CBA would counter, with Syracuse University-bound senior Katie Webster as the anchor. Before it was done, Webster would earn five goals and five assists, and her work kept the Brothers close as it kept answering every time Westhill went ahead in the second half. With less than five minutes left, CBA went in front for good on Taylor Gait’s goal, then extended the margin to two when Webster got that fifth goal with 3:34 left. Though Haggerty answered a minute later, the Warriors saw its last-second charge to the net to force overtime turned away. Haggerty matched Webster’s five goals, adding two assists. Rainone added four goals and one assist as Buonocore got the other three goals. Gait, Sophie Racciatti and Caroline Webster (two goals each) offered the help on CBA’s side. Two days earlier, the Warriors hosted Cazenovia and avenged an April 7 defeat to the Lakers in a big way, winning by a 17-8margin. Just like that first meeting, Westhill seized the early lead. Unlike that first time, though, the Warriors did not let go of that advantage, increasing the tempo in the second half to turn a 7-4 edge into a lopsided affair. Four players accounted for all of the Warriors’ goals. Haggerty had 10 points, stemming from four goals and six assists. Rainone wasn’t far behind, adding five goals and three assists as Buonocore also put together five goals. Maggie Tripodi had three goals and two assists. All this came as it was announced that Roach had signed her national letter of intent to attend Wagner College on Staten Island. The Westhill boys team toyed with winless Bishop Ludden on Tuesday, ripping past the Gaelic Knights 19-1 as the Warriors scored nine times in the first quarter and cruised from there. Tris Nicola backed up his two goals with five assists, as Dylan Tripodi got two goals and four assists. John Zimmerman and Sal Valenti each found the net three times as Austin Webb and Alex Lesins both earned two goals. Joe Snyder, Owen Nicola, Ryan Manzano, Connor Byrne and Justin Selbach also scored.
