The Camillus Police Department has reported several complaints involving a Secret Shopper scam that citizens have received in the mail. The scam tells people to deposit an enclosed check into their bank account, then to go to a Wal-Mart store and purchase items while rating the service of the store. The “secret shoppers” are then directed to go to a Western Union location and wire funds back to a person named on the letter, while rating the service at the Western Union location. The letter tells the recipient that they will be able to keep around $400 for their participation. This scam allows the receiver to retrieve the funds from Western Union, and because the deposited check is a fake, the bank takes the funds from the depositor and the “secret shopper” is responsible for paying the money. If you should receive such a scam letter, please call the Camillus Police Department to report the incident at 487-0102.
