When the cold, wet weather cleared up, the Cicero-North Syracuse baseball team resumed action and tried to flourish during the spring break – but did not meet with complete success. In its first outing since the April 15 loss to Baldwinsville, the Northstars took a while to crank up last Monday against Central Square — but did so, and beat the Red Hawks 9-3. Central Square took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but that was all the hosts would allow as Joe Pokrentowski, who earned the win, and Austin Hyde combined to blank the Red Hawks the rest of the way and only allow six total hits. CNS was still down, 3-1, when it used five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take charge and chase Central Square pitcher Joey Battaglia. Cory Burrows and Blake Monday (whose grand slam helped beat Auburn a week earlier) both finished with two RBIs, while Rob Quinn doubled and drove in a run. John Howell also had an RBI. Going to Fayetteville-Manlius two days later, the Northstars stumbled, seeing a three-run lead disappear in a 9-7 loss to the Hornets. F-M had lost five straight entering the game, but did not melt away when CNS seized a 4-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Instead, the Hornets tied things up in the fourth, then, after the Northstars went back ahead 5-4, made its big move with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Even with single runs in the sixth and seventh, CNS could not catch up, as Rob Renaud took the loss in relief of James Coleman. The Northstars had just seven hits to the Hornets’ 13, as Jack Hotaling had two RBIs and Quinn, Brian Hamlton and Brian Dykeman drove in one run apiece. For F-M, Pat McClure produced three hits and Mike Perry earned three RBIs. Back home at Gillette Friday to face Henninger, the Northstars rebounded with a 6-3 victory over the Black Knights. A three-run second inning gave CNS a lead it would not relinquish, though Henninger closed within 4-3 before the Northstars scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to pull clear. Kyano Cummings pitched and earned the win, with Pokrentowski working in relief. Combined, they allowed just four hits. Howell and Riley Moonan both had two RBIs, with Hamilton and Monday each driving in one run. CNS would step out of league play again Saturday to face state-ranked Christian Brothers Academy and take a 6-5 loss to the Brothers. Ahead 2-1, the Northstars would surrender that advantage when CBA scored twice in the third and three more times in the top of the fifth, partly due to the hosts committing five errors in the field. CNS nearly made it back from that 6-2 deficit, pulling within one before the Brothers hung on. Hamilton had the game’s only home run, finishing with two RBIs as Matt Centolella, Brian Dykeman and Matt Dykeman drove in single runs. Tyler Smith took the loss. At 4-3 following this crowded stretch, CNS goes to Auburn Tuesday before seeking payback against B’ville on Thursday. The Northstars are home again Saturday to meet Oneida.
