Perhaps the biggest news made in the Westhill lacrosse program during the week of the April school break came from a distinguished alumnus far from Central New York. Laura Zimmerman led the nation’s new no. 1-ranked women’s team, North Carolina, to a historic 18-16 win over Northwestern on April 18, ending what had been the Wildcats’ 41-game win streak. Zimmerman had five goals and two assists in that game, giving her 23 goals and 15 assists on the season and Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors, too. Back home, Westhill had its own bit of drama in Wednesday’s game against Jordan-Elbridge, but held on to beat the Eagles 11-10. Up 6-4 at halftime, the Warriors needed every bit of Brenna Rainone’s superb effort to stay in front as she posted five goals and three assists. Rainone’s passes went to Caroline Buonocore, who had four goals, and Emily Haggerty, who scored twice. Molly Kiggins had two assists and Maggie Tripodi got a single assist. Morgan Roach posted 11 saves, the same number as J-E’s Kelsey Richardson, as Ella Thorpe and Kelsey Youmell led the Eagles’ effort with twin three-goal hat tricks. In yet another close affair on Friday, Westhill lost, 13-12, to Tully, despite a frantic second half where the Warriors almost overcame a 5-3 deficit. Rainone scored four times as Haggerty got three goals and three assists, with Buonocore stepping up for three goals and one assist. Meg Dwyer and Maggie Tripodi each had one goal and one assist. Five different Tully players had multiple goals – Alison Bolt, Courtney DeOrdio (three each), Amanda Briggs, Sara Klaben and Alexis Drumm (two each). Westhill’s boys team came close to upending state no. 13-ranked Cazenovia Tuesday afternoon, but could not make a good first half stick in a 14-12 loss to the Lakers. Led by Dylan Tripodi, who finished with five goals and two assists, and Tris Nicola, who had five assists, the Warriors started on a strong note, grabbing a 5-2 lead by the end of the first quarter. Though Cazenovia made a small dent in the second period, it still led 8-5 going into the break. But the Lakers turned things around by going on a 6-2 run to start the second half, with freshman Connor Cannizzaro leading the way as he matched Tripodi’s five-goal output by the time it was done. Westhill could not rally, though Sal Valenti and Austin Webb offered the main help to Tripodi and Nicola, getting two goals apiece. Justin Selbach and John Zimmerman had the other goals. Trying to bounce back Thursday against Tully, the Warriors did so in a dramatic contest that went to double overtime before the hosts beat the Black Knights 7-6. Steady production and first-rate defense allowed Westhill to play Tully to a 4-4 halftime tie. The Warriors appeared to get control by blanking the Black Knights in the third quarter, but Tully countered by keeping the Warriors off the board in the final period and rallying to tie it, 6-6. So they went to overtime. One extra period went by without a resolution — but in the second extra period, Westhill notched the game-winner. Tripodi finished with two goals and two assists. Nicola also scored twice, adding one assist as Webb, Zimmerman and Valenti got the other goals. Tully stayed in it due to the work of goalie Eric Randanzo, who made 24 saves.
