Continuing its fine early-season efforts, the Oneida boys track and field team would beat Vernon Verona Sherrill and the rest of the field in last Wednesday’s Tri-Valley League Relays at New Hartford. All told, the Indians earned 113 points, just ahead of runner-up Holland Patent (97 points), while the Red Devils took fourth place with 73 points. Mike Rabbitt and Eric Riley helped Oneida win the 400-meter hurdles with two total times of 1:56.5 as a second team took third place in 2:06.3. In the high jump, Rabbitt and Riley won again, combining to clear 12 feet as, again, Oneida’s second squad had a third-place showing. Riley teamed with Jimmy Moyer to win the triple jump, the pair going 81 feet 1/2 inch between them. And in the long jump, Rabbitt and Zach Hall went 39 feet 4 1/2 inches for yet another win. In the discus, Kyle Blessing helped engineer another Indians win with two throws adding up to 221 feet. Oneida was second in both the shot put (75 feet 9 1/4 inches) and pole vault (19 feet), so it nearly swept the field events. VVS would prevail in the 4×200 relay, earning a time of 1:34.3 to beat New Hartford by more than two seconds. It also had a lot of second-place finishes, including the 4×100 (46.4 seconds), distance medley (11:29.6), sprint medley (4:06.4), 4×800 (8:59.3) and long jump (36 feet 7 1/2 inches), plus a third in the triple jump. Meanwhile, the Oneida and VVS girls track teams both found success at the Tully Spring Break Inviational. The Indians featured Rachael Kline, who prevailed in the five-event pentathlon. She covered the 100 hurdles, shot put, long jump, high jump and 800-meter run with 2,319 points, beating Bishop Grimes’ Samantha Schaefer (2,227 points) and the rest of the field. Also, Taylor Youngkrans won the discus, tossing it 111 feet 1 inch to finish far ahead of the field as she also claimed fourth (29 feet 11 1/4 inches) in the shot put. Sara Rifendifer took fourth in the 800-meter run (2:34.43) and Morgan Bernier took fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:13.36), while Jordan Armstrong was fifth in the long jump (14 feet 3 1/4 inches) and sixth in the 100. Sam Carinci was sixth in the 100 hurdles. Vivian Thurston cleared 7 feet for fifth in the pole vault. The Indians were also fourth in the 4×100 (55.69 seconds) and 1,600 sprint medley (4:45.69) and fifth in the 4×400. VVS saw Tammy Beal earn third in the 100 hurdles in 17.90 seconds and fifth in the 400 hurdles. Elaine Slaven win the high jump, clearing 5 feet. Slaven, Maggie Curtis, Kayla Fazekas and Gabbie Koons got third in the 4×400 relay (4:32.65). Alyssa Durant had a fourth-place triple jump of 29 feet 8 inches. Kerry Miley and Casey Kane were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 800-meter run, with Koons sixth in the 800. Once again, Canastota’s Allison Lasnicki would play a starring role. The University of Connecticut-bound senior won the 1,500-meter run in 4:55.83, more than 20 seconds clear of the field, and ran 3,000 meters in 10:21.24 to top the field by a larger margin.
