With its 22-meet league win streak broken by Baldwinsville on April 14, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys track and field team had no intention of starting a different kind of streak. Thus, it was important that the Northstars survive last Tuesday’s meet with Rome Free Academy – which it did, holding on to beat the Black Knights 72-69 at RFA Stadium. With every point precious, CNS grabbed all the top spots in distance races, with Chris Buchanan at the helm. Buchanan was first in the mile in 4:38.7 and also claimed the 3,2000-meter title in 10:33 flat. Jared Walther earned the victory in the 800-meter run (2:11.4) as Dan Fritz anchored a 4×800 relay quartet that took first place in 8:58.7. Eric Munoz joined in, too, winning the 400-meter dash in 52.5 seconds. Needing to pick off points in field events, the Northstars did so as Jared Thomson swept the throwing events. Thomson heaved the discus 136 feet 5 inches and tossed the shot put 46 feet 4 inches, while Carl Patzer cleared 5 feet 8 inches to take the high jump. RFA’s Anthony DeJean stood out, as usual, as he ran the 100-meter dash in a blazing 10.6 seconds and uncorked a top long jump of 23 feet 6 1/4 inches. DeJean also won the 200-meter dash and helped the Black Knights’ 4×100 relay team prevail in 44.7 seconds. The girls meet between CNS and RFA at Bragman Stadium proved a bit more lopsided, as Jasmine Thompson led the Northstars to flatten the Black Knights 105-36. Thompson won four times as she went 16 feet 8 1/2 inches in the long jump, flew 37 feet 1 inch in the triple jump, cleared 5 feet 4 inches in the high jump and won the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.4 seconds. Valerie Langevin and Jessica Wheeler tacked on their own double titles. Langevin rolled to wins in the shot put (34 feet 3 inches) and discus (103 feet 10 inches), while Wheeler cleared 9 feet in the pole vault in addition to taking the 400-meter hurdles in 1:13.3. Also on the oval, Marissa Colburn beat the field in the 3,000-meter run (11:23.3), with Jackie Halstead taking the 1,500-meter run in 5:25.5. Shannon Bausinger was first in the 800 (2:32.4) as Nicole Campagna needed 1:02.2 to win the 400-meter dash. CNS won just one of the three relays – the 4×800, where Bausinger, Katie Laris, Chelsea Davidson and Nicole Watterud covered the distance in 10:55.9. On Saturday, the girls Northstars found itself in the unusual position of being a “visiting” team for Liverpool’s “Star War” Invitational, but hosting the event because the Warriors do not have a home track. In a highly-anticipated 100 hurdles showdown, Thompson beat Utica Proctor’s Shykiera Hayard, 15.46 seconds to 15.47. Later, Thompson joined Nicole Campagna, Katie Osborne and Taylor Wendler to dominate the 1,600 sprint medley, winning in 4:14.08, with runner-up Liverpool nearly 14 seconds behind. Langevin rolled to victory in the discus with a throw of 108 feet and was fourth in the shot put as Mariah Thomson impressed with a second-place toss of 33 feet 9 inches. Wheeler improved to 9 feet 6 inches in the pole vault and finished second, and she also took fourth in the 100 hurdles. Campagna ran to third in the 400-meter dash (1:02.70) and Colburn got third place in the 1,500 (5:11.06). Watterud was fourth in the 3,000 (10:30.85) and Davidson claimed fourth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (7:56.98), as Jacqlyn Halstead took sixth.
