Maybe things are lining up for the Cazenovia boys lacrosse team to make a championship push in 2010. At the very least, the Lakers are giving future opponents a lot to worry about, as it showed again Friday night when it went to Marcellus and overwhelmed the Mustangs 15-6 to earn its fourth consecutive victory. Both teams came into the game with equal 3-1 marks, and both wanted to prove that they could give Class C favorites LaFayette and Skaneateles a real battle down the road. What’s especially true about this Cazenovia group is that, at any time, it can piece together explosive bursts of offense, as Marcellus found out. The first came after the Mustangs used two goals in 20 seconds by Greg Ramsden and Carmen Brienza to seize a 2-0 lead in the game’s opening minute. Brett Axelson responded with back-to-back goals, and when John Greacen converted, Cazenovia had its first lead at 3-2. Those three tallies were just 1:38 apart. Important as that was, what took place early in the second quarter, with the game tied 4-4, really wounded the Mustangs. It commenced when Connor Cannizzaro scored to give the Lakers a 5-4 lead. Then Joe Nardella won the ensuing face-off, sprinted downfield and found Cannizzaro for another goal. And before the Mustangs could regroup, Greacen returned for his second goal of the night. Those three scoring plays took a grand total of 22 seconds to accomplish, and gave Cazenovia a lead it would never relinquish. The Lakers were up 9-5 at halftime, and despite a 2-1 shot advantage, Cazenovia could not add to it in the third quarter. Marcellus still had life, especially after a penalty gave the Mustangs a man-up situation to start the final period. Once the Lakers killed that chance, though, it put things away with yet another outburst – goals by Connor Cannizzaro, Sean Cannizzaro and Axelson in a 1:36 span. All told, Connor had five goals for the night. Cazenovia returns to the road during the spring-break week, visiting Westhill Tuesday and Bishop Ludden Saturday. The Lakers are not home again until April 29, when it meets Tully.
