Beaten in its first three games, the Solvay baseball team dramatically turned things around in Monday’s trip to Phoenix, doing everything right in an 18-0 shutout of the Firebirds. The Bearcats got runs in all but one inning, including a stretch where it scored seven times in the top of the fourth and six more times in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach. All told, Solvay had 14 hits, including Kyle Groth earning two doubles on his way to four RBIs for the afternoon. Groth did this in support of his own two-hit pitching effort as the Bearcats did not commit an error behind him. John Savo drove in three runs as Ronn Bidwell had a double and two RBIs. Taylor Delperuto, Jack DeGonzaque, Matt Fantacone and Dan Chilton drove in one run apiece. And the revival continued Wednesday, against Cazenovia, as R.J. Lostumbo took the mound and, after a rough start, dominated the rest of the way as the Bearcats beat the Lakers 8-2. Both of Cazenovia’s runs came in the first inning. Lostumbo shook that off and, in the next six frames, tossed a shutout, eventually limiting the Lakers to just five hits. It helped that Solvay answered with four runs in the bottom of the first off Max Kellish to take the lead for good, then scored again in three of the next four innings. Fantacone and Bidwell both had two RBIs, with DeGonzaque, Delperuto and Jeremiah Cregan driving in one run apiece. Cregan, Bidwell and Savo each belted a triple. Solvay’s softball team began its week meeting Phoenix and, in a reversal of the baseball team’s fate, took its first loss of the season to the Firebirds 8-4. All the damage took place in the middle stages. Phoenix got two runs off Gabrielle Nurod in the bottom of the third to break a 0-0 deadlock, then erupted for six runs an inning later as Kayleigh Troia, with three RBIs, led the hosts. Not quitting, the Bearcats ate away at that margin in the late going as Breezy Rigall and Nicole Groth both earned RBIs, but Phoenix held on. The Bearcats’ struggles continued in a 9-6 defeat to Cazenovia, which saw the Bearcats twice come back in the early innings after falling behind 2-0 and 3-2 to take a 6-3 lead. Nurod, Danielle Tartaro and Kiersten Dibello all got credit for RBIs. But Cazenovia regained control in the top of the fifth, batting around and knocking Nurod from the game with six runs. Though Brenna Poli blanked the Lakers in the last two innings, Solvay could not come back.
