Together, students and sports teams at Fayetteville-Manlius and Chittenango are honoring the memory of beloved English teacher John Shafer on Saturday, May 1. The event, called “Something For Shafer”, will take place on the F-M school campus, starting with an afternoon full of varsity and JV sports events and culminating at night with a dance where F-M and Chittenango students are invited to attend. Shafer passed away at age 52 on Feb. 12, eight months after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He left behind a wife, Susan, and two children, all of whom live in Chittenango. To help raise money for the Shafer children’s college education, F-M and Chittenango have put together this day-long charity event, to be coordinated by the F-M Booster Club. At 3 p.m., the varsity baseball and softball teams from F-M and Chittenango will face each other at opposite ends of the school campus, as will the JV teams. While that is going on, the girls lacrosse Hornets will face Oswego, just before a 5 p.m. game between the F-M boys lacrosse team and Henninger. Just behind the main stadium, assorted F-M student-run clubs will be hosting games, activities and raffles, as well as selling concessions, during the course of the afternoon. Then, from 7:30 to 10:30, F-M and Chittenango students will gather inside the high school for a dance that features a “Battle of the Bands”, with two bands from both schools performing, along with a live DJ. The admission to the dance is $20 for students, who will all receive purple T-shirts in honor of the fight against pancreatic cancer.
