It pleased the home folks that the Cicero-North Syracuse girls track and field team dominated Baldwnisville 115-26 last Wednesday at Bragman Stadium — but a much bigger story was unfolding a few miles west on Route 31. Competing at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, the boys track Northstars saw its run of 22 consecutive CNY Counties League National division victories end at the expense of Baldwinsville, who used a string of wins on the oval, plus a relay sweep, to beat CNS 76-65. Even Eric Munoz and Jared Thomson could not turn things around, despite two wins apiece. Munoz prevailed in the triple jump (41 feet 8 1/4 inches) and long jump (19 feet 9 inches), with Thomson throwing the discus 130 feet 7 inches and shot put 46 feet 2 inches to take both events. Mike Hyde added a win in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet.
Success proved far more elusive on the track, despite Munoz winning a third time in the 400-meter dash (52.7 seconds). Other than Chris Buchanan, who swept to wins in the mile (4:26.5) and 3,200-meter run (9:37.1), CNS came up dry as B’ville got double wins from Andrew Hoover (110 high hurdles, 400 hurdles) and Rudy Sapp (100 and 200-meter dash). As this went on, the CNS girls were blowing out B’ville with lots of contributions from Jasmine Thompson, who earned four titles. After winning the 100-meter hurdles in 15.0 seconds, Thompson turned to field events. She cleared 5 feet 2 inches in the high jump, went 35 feet 10 inches in the triple jump and also won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet 5 inches. Jessica Wheeler took the pole vault (7 feet) and 400 hurdles (1:14.8), while Katie Osborne took the 100 (13.1 seconds) and 200 (26.9 seconds) sprints. Marissa Colburn (800, 2:29.6), Maria Lamontagne (1,500 meters, 5:05.7) and Dana Rinaldi (3,000 meters, 11:56.3) swept the distance events. Valerie Langevin won the discus with a toss of 112 feet 9 inches as Casey Wilmer (32 feet 4 inches) took the shot put. The winning 4×100 (54.4 seconds), 4×400 (4:25.8) and 4×800 (10:44.5) relays included Colburn, Wheeler, Sarah Dean, Brooke Binion, Shelby Howell, Sarah Shannon, Jackie Halstead, Katie Laris, Chelsea Davidson, Danielle Ford and Nicole Campagna.
