So far, the Marcellus boys lacrosse team has flourished in OHSL competition, pulling out close games against its neighbors. That happened again Tuesday afternoon, when the Mustangs went to Jordan-Elbridge and, led by Matt McCaffer, squeaked out a 13-12 victory over the Eagles. Marcellus used a steady, solid attack in the first half to gain a 9-6 lead. But J-E erased most of that deficit in the third quarter, its defense vastly improved as it closed within 11-10. By the late stages of regulation, it was tied, but the Mustangs were used to this, having needed overtime to beat Westhill a week earlier. Sure enough, McCaffer put in what proved to be the winning goal, finishing off a game where he had a career-best 10 points that included five goals and five assists. Offering the help, Carmen Brienza had three goals, with Steve Brissette getting two goals and one assist. Greg Ramsden, Nick Nye and Tom Glose also scored, with Luke McNaney, R.J. Linder and Tyler Tomeny earning assists. On J-E’s side, Cody Lewis backed up his two goals with three assists as Dylan Johnson found the net four times. Tyler Richardson also had two goals as Jeff Guadagnolo earned a goal and three assists. Gale Thorpe, Tom Delap and Anthony Gabriel scored, too, with Zach Stevenson adding an assist. Connor Smart’s 21 saves kept the game close.
