A whole series of high school boys tennis matches would unfold in the week that led up to the April school break. On a crowded Monday, Oneida moved itself to 2-0 in a tight match against Clinton, needing a key point in doubles to pull out a 4-3 victory over the Warriors. With every other match decided, all attention got paid to the Indians’ pair of Paul Froass and Neil Perry, who faced Cllinton’s duo of Sam Korrigan and Tristan Bass-Kruger. After losing the first set, Froass and Kruger rallied and took the match 6-7 (7-2), 6-2, 6-4 for the clinching point. The four singles matches were split, as Andy Parlow and Shawn Ano won on the Indians’ side. Also, in doubles, Trevor Haskell and David Kann got together to pound Josh Levitt and Jim English in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. Vernon Verona Sherrill could not get a point in a 7-0 defeat to Holland Patent, despite three different three-set encounters where the Red Devils led early, but could not hold on. Steve Geer led early, but still fell to Joe Zielinski 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Dylan Duchene met the same fate, dominating the first set before Aaron Rizzuto rallied past him 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Finally, Matt McCall got a quick start and went to a third-set tie-breaker, but fell to Eric Armitage 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Chittenango lost to Homer by that same 7-0 margin, unable to win a set in any of the seven matches. In the closest calls, Tanner Makowski fell to Tyler Camp 6-2, 6-4, while Kody Busse and Anthony Smith had a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Bob Chambrone and Jason Crawford. Morrisville-Eaton fell to Mount Markham 3-2, with both points coming in doubles. Jimmy Johnston and Stephanie Davis beat Tim Rowe and Annabel Joschko 6-4, 6-4, while J.T. Metz and Dakota Miller beat Jessica VanWieren and Melanie Gifford by those exact same scores. Back in action on Wednesday, the Warriors beat Waterville by that same 3-2 margin, all the points coming from doubles as Johnston and Davis lost in three sets to Jaik Smith and Max Perrin 1-6, 6-1, 6-1. Marcus O’Hara beat Mike Purcell and Dylan Clark defeated Alex Savage by the exact same 6-2, 6-4 margins, while Ty Banker took a bit longer, but still beat Jed Lamont 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. On Tuesday, VVS lost to New Hartford in another 7-0 decision, unable to take a set. Ian Adams, in first singles, had a solid effort, but still lost to Robert John 6-3, 6-1. But the Red Devils would shut out Canastota 5-0 on Wednesday. Shane Sullivan, in third singles, got a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win over Marvin Wilke, while Duchene beat Sean Coppola 6-4, 6-1 and Ian Adams took out Jon Rouse 6-3, 6-1. Down in doubles, both matches were one-sided. Geer teamed with Dan Walts to blank Chris Sprague and Dan Klish 6-0, 6-0, with McCall and Travis Regner earning a 6-1, 6-1 sweep of Sprague and Ron Brane. In Chittenango’s 6-1 defeat to Mexico, Andres Corrales broke up a possible shutout, needing three sets to get past Chris Harter 6-4, 4-6, 11-9. Four other times, the Bears lost in three sets. Connor Toth led early, but fell to Dana Rowe 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, with Ryan Leonard absorbing a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 defeat to Dan Fisher. In doubles, Chase Martin and Corey Rivet lost to Colt Taylor and Andy DeSanto 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, with Tanner Makowski and Josh Buntz part of a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 loss to Morgan Williams and Jake Denno. Hamilton returned on Thursday and earned a rain-shortened 3-0 win over Canastota. Josh Valencia won the only singles match, 6-2, 6-1, over Rouse, while the doubles teams of David Schutt-John Valencia and Allen Schult-Bailey O’Keeffe prevailed before the precipitation hit.
