So this is how the West Genesee boys lacrosse team, totally unaccustomed to slow starts, responded when 3-0, high-powered Baldwinsville paid a visit to Camillus Friday night. First, the Wildcats switched goalies, inserting sophomore Scott Sidnam into Tim Birchler’s old spot. Then it proceeded to make sure that Sidnam never felt any serious stress, scoring three times in the game’s first 91 seconds and reached double digits in the opening period on its way to a 20-10 victory over the Bees. One defeat (16-8 to Jamesville-DeWitt on March 30) was difficult enough for Wildcat partisans. But it sure appeared that the 12-11 overtime loss to Corcoran a week later had a bigger impact. Two hard days of practice and one goalie switch later, WG lined up against B’ville, who had put up 60 goals in three wins over lesser opposition (CBA, Onondaga and Central Square) than anything the Wildcats had dealt with so far. John Glesener won the opening face-off, then got it to Bob Gasparini, whose first shot of the game found the net in just 20 seconds. Just 14 seconds later, Glesener took his turn to score, and at the 1:31 mark Casey Schattner hit a goal and made it 3-0. When Glesener, off a screen, found the net again, it was 4-0 – and the game wasn’t even four minutes old, and B’ville had not even touched the ball. So it continued throughout the first quarter as Gasparini connected on three more goals and Corey Herrington found the net twice. Even defender Joe Fletcher tore through B’ville’s rattled defenders and put in a goal. When the barrage ended, WG had a 10-3 edge, and the Bees were permanently wounded. The rest of the game was spent determining how large the margin would be, as head coach Mike Messere got to rest his starters late. Gasparini and Glesener each finished with four goals, as Herrington scored three times. Dylan Donahue and Ian Farley got two goals apiece as Chris Murphy, Jim Cordon and Brandon Dzwonkowski took turns getting late tallies. For B’ville, Dom Darcangelo led with four goals, but Syracuse University-bound senior Billy Ward never got going, held to just two goals. On Tuesday, the Wildcats meet Liverpool at the Solvay High School turf the Warriors are using as a temporary home field before coming back to Camillus next Friday to face Henninger.
