When the Jamesville-DeWitt baseball team recorded two runs in the top of the ninth inning of Tuesday’s game at Mexico, all looked to be settled. But the Tigers didn’t think so, the defending Section III Class A champions storming back with its own rally that ended with the Red Rams absorbing a 6-5 defeat. Mexico had a 1-0 lead when, in the top of the third inning, J-D used three runs to pull out in front. That didn’t last too long, though, as the Tigers chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull even at 3-3. So it remained, deep into extra frames. In the top of the ninth, J-D struck, scoring twice. But Matt Yonta, pitching in relief after mound stints from Justin Marzella and Eric Schwartz, could not keep the Tigers from tying it 5-5, then prevailing on Dominic Veiga’s RBI single. J-D had just six hits for the day, but that included doubles from Mason Schoeneck and Tom Driscoll as Mike Gianni and Anthony Dunn got credit for RBIs. On Mexico’s side, John Beck smashed a home run on his way to three RBIs. Recovering quickly, the Red Rams returned home on Wednesday afternoon to play Fulton and worked its way to a 5-2 victory over the Red Raiders. Down 1-0 early, J-D pulled in front with two runs in the bottom of the third. When Fulton tied it 2-2 in the fourth, the Rams stayed patient, then made its decisive move with a three-run fifth-inning outburst. That gave Gianni the win on the mound, as he went most of the way before Josh Paduano came in to earn the save. J-D had just four hits, yet still won by playing error-free defense as Mick Cariseo earned two RBIs, with Marzella and Driscoll driving in one run apiece.
