It took him nearly two years to complete, but Greg Massara’s plant identification project at Marcellus Park has earned him the highest rank of Eagle Scout. Massara, 18, a senior at Marcellus High School, began his project by identifying the greenery around Crooked Creek in the park in the spring of 2008. With the help of Marcellus Parks and Recreation Director Phil Coccia, Audrey Loewer at Baltimore Woods, and SUNY-ESF professors Dave Nowak and Donald Leopold, Massara was able to research plants along the entire trail. Now, visitors to the park can walk along the trail and read both the common and latin names for the vegetation they see. The signs, fabricated by Massara and the scouts of Troop 66, are on display now at the park. Massara plans to attend Onondaga Community College in the fall.
