Mere days after Westhill’s state championship run ended in boys basketball, a new season started — that of the boys lacrosse Warriors. And it proved successful, too, as the Warriors rode two well-timed offensive surges to a 10-4 victory over Fulton last Monday night at Central Square’s turf. Westhill is coming off a 2009 season where it went 14-7 and went all the way to the Section III Class C semifinals before falling to Skaneateles. Some key seniors have left, including Kyle Nicholas, Sam Penizotto and Tim Burgess, but a lot of talent is back, including Dylan Tripodi and Tris Nicola, both of whom took turns dismantling Fulton in the opener. With the score tied 2-2 after one period, Tripodi and Nicola helped Westhill pick up four straight goals to close out the half and build a 6-2 margin. Neither side scored in the third period, but the Warriors made another late surge to get clear. Tripodi scored four times, while Nicola got three goals and one assist. Justin Selbach, Owen Nicola and Alex Lesins also scored, with John Zimmerman picking up a pair of assists and David Brusa adding one assist. Andrew Torak, starting in goal, had eight saves. Westhill would play Monday, at Marcellus, before meeting Jordan-Elbridge in Thursday’s home opener.
