In an ongoing effort to combat severe cuts expected in sales tax revenue, the Marcellus Village Board eliminated the lieutenant position from the Marcellus Police Department in favor of creating two sergeant positions. Officer Keith Gates previously filled the lieutenant post in the department, and was immediately rehired by the board as a sergeant, which receives an hourly wage of $18.50. Mayor Michael Plochocki said the number of hours the police department patrolled each month would not be affected by the change. The current village board did not fill the second sergeant position last week. The official poll results for the March 18 village elections are as follows:
Mayor
John P. Curtin, 161 votes
Michael Plochocki, 13 write-in votes
Trustee
Patrick W. Cox, 174 votes
A total of 185 voters cast their ballots.
The new village officials will be sworn-in prior to the village annual organizational meeting , set for 7 p.m. Monday April 5. The tentative budget hearing will follow at 7:30 p.m. In other news
The board set a date for the official dedication and a public tour of the “Tree Walk,” for April 30. The Tree Walk was one of Mayor Michael Plochocki’s most passionate projects while in office, and includes newly planted trees along many village streets that reflect the native species found in Marcellus in the 1700s. The dates for spring brush pickup will be Monday March 29 through Friday April 30. Plochocki announced the village water department was awarded Sewer System of the Year by the New York Rural Water Association. The honor recognizes the department’s commitment to maintaining the system. Congratulations to department staff Greg Crysler and Ryan Riefler.
