Now it’s time for the top Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse indoor track and field athletes to go to Cornell University in pursuit of medals at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet. What adds to the pressure and challenge of the state meet was the fact that the Section III qualifier took place just five days earlier, at Manley Field House, the result of a Feb. 25-26 winter snowstorm that pushed the schedule back. Liverpool’s Zavon Watkins concentrated, individually, on the 1,000-meter run and won that event in a time of 2:33.75 as teammate Colin Savage claimed sixth place. Watkins also helped Chris Clemons, Colin Savage and Tony Shuler take the 4×400 relay in 3:26.87 to advance to Cornell, and Alex Wilke joined Watkins, Clemons and Savage as the Warriors also took the 4×800 relay in 8:33.08. In the 55-meter hurdles, Joe Spernyak won in 7.97 seconds, the only competitor to break the eight-second mark. Shuler was seventh in the 55-meter dash. Jason Osborne advanced to the state meet with his second-place shot put toss of 47 feet 4 1/2 inches, with CNS’s Jared Thomson (46 feet 1/4 inch) stuck in third. The Northstars’ Brendan Ryan also was seventh in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet 6 inches. Moving to the girls side, the CNS tandem of Jasmine Thompson and Katie Osborne went 1-2 in the 55-meter hurdles, as Thompson won in 8.71 seconds and Osborne (8.79 seconds) took the runner-up spot. Nicole Watterud got third place in the 1,500-meter run in 4:53.32 as Liverpool’s Lesley Bowers finished fourth in 5:00.83 and Chelsea Attaway was ninth, just behind CNS’s Marissa Colburn. In the 600-meter run, Nicole Campagna just missed making the state meet, finishing third in 1:40.99, just behind Auburn’s Patricia Fleishman (1:40.27), as Liverpool’s Rachel Putman was fourth in 1:42.82. And in the 1,000-meter run, another CNS star, Maria Lamontagne, was third in 3:00.17, with the Warriors’ Trina Bills in fifth. Taylor Wendler got third place (11:12.11) in the 3,000-meter run. Dana Rinaldi claimed second in the 1,500-meter race walk in 10:16.30, with Shannon Bausinger in fourth place (10:44.54). Liverpool’s quartet of Putman, Trina Bills, Skye Borasky and Hannah Anthes was fourth in the 4×400 relay in 4:17.76. Anthes, on her own, took sixth in the 55-meter dash. Jessica Wheeler gave CNS a berth in the state meet when she finished second in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet with fewer misses than Cazenovia’s Piper Gianforte. Liverpool saw Tatiana Gladney earn third place in the shot put with a toss of 33 feet 9 1/2 inches, just out of the qualifying spots. CNS teammates Casey Wilmer and Valerie Langevin were fifth and sixth, respectively. Armani Moore was sixth (33 feet 3/4 inch) in the triple jump.
