Thanks to that huge winter snowstorm of Feb. 25-26, Section III indoor track and field athletes would have to go through the state qualifier at Manley Field House, plus the state meet itself at Cornell University, in a short span of six days. This first end of the picture didn’t bother Canastota senior Allison Lasnicki, who dominated the long-distance races at Manley. First, Lasnicki went to the 3,000-meter run and gradually pulled away from the field, finishing in 10 minutes, 24.88 seconds, comfortably ahead of West Genesee eighth-grader Laura Leff (10:35.24) in second place. Then, turning to the 1,500-meter run, Lasnicki engaged in a terrifc duel with CBA’s Katie Brislin — but at the line, Lasnicki prevailed in 4:51.17, just ahead of Brislin (4:52.52), who also qualified for the state meet. Meanwhile, in the boys state qualifier, Oneida senior Mike Rabbitt also earned state meet berths in two different events. Rabbitt prevailed in the high jump as he cleared 6 feet 4 inches, two inches better than a trio of rivals — Corcoran’s Jalen Sanders, Old Forge’s Kevin Kress and Baldwinsville’s Brian Kane. Also, Rabbitt took second in the 55-meter hurdles, his time of 8.11 seconds trailing only Liverpool’s Joe Spernyak, who won in 7.97 seconds. Elsewhere at the qualifier, Chittenango senior Brian Bohne was sixth in the boys 55-meter dash in 6.89 seconds and took seventh in the 300-meter dash 37.56 seconds. Oneida senior Jordan Armstrong was eighth in the girls long jump, going 15 feet 1 1/2 inches. Canastota junior Chris Barnhart was seventh in the boys triple jump with 38 feet 3 inches. His teamamte, Aaron Walker, earned eighth place in the mile in 4:36.13. When Rabbitt went to Saturday’s state meet at Cornell, he would contend again in the high jump, finishing in fifth place, even though he shared second in terms of being part of a large group (including Baldwinsville’s Brian Kane) that cleared 6 feet 4 inches. O’Neil Sanford (Paul Robeson) won by clearing 6 feet 8 inches. With a time of 8.18 seconds, Rabbitt did not make it out of the preliminary round of the 55 hurdles. Meanwhile, Lasnicki won her heat in the 3,000 and was ninth overall in a clocking of 10:19.76, nearly a five-second improvement over the qualifier, as she was also 20th (4:58.68) in the 1,500.
