Several indoor track and field athletes, especially from Fayetteville-Manlius and Jamesville-DeWitt, won at Monday night’s snow-delayed Section III state qualifier, making it to this Saturday’s state meet at Cornell University. None resonated more than the Hornets’ dominant effort in the 4×800 relay. Combined, Kathryn Fanning, Katie Sischo, Heather Martin and Courtney Chapman shattered the Section III mark in the event, posting a time of 9:11.63 — more than six seconds faster than the mark the Hornets set two years ago at Cornell. F-M finished nearly a minute ahead of the field here. From there, Sischo and Chapman went to the 1,000-meter run and pulled off a 1-2 finish, as Sischo hit the finish line in 2:54.43 and Chapman took the runner-up spot in 2:55.33. CBA’s Rachel Zajdel was fourth in 3:06.60. Meanwhile, in the boys distance races, Alex Hatz toyed with the field, the senior gliding through the mile in 4:21.40 to comfortably finish in front by nearly three seconds over Fulton’ s Noah Carroll. And in the 3,200, Hatz won in 9:39.08, again more than three seconds clear of the runner-up, in this case Westhill’s Kevin Zych. CBA’s Tom Voorheis was third in 9:45.75, just missing a state meet berth. J-D had its fair share of winners, too, including David Salbert, who held off Utica Proctor’s Richard Pete in the triple jump. Salbert went 46 feet 4 1/4 inches, just 2 1/2 inches better than Pete. Salbert also helped Ira Griffin, Eric Semmel and Will Sterriker take second place in the 4×200 relay in 1:35.36, just behind Rome Free Academy (1:34.63). In the 4×400 relay, Salbert, Griffin, Bumkuth Jiak and Tim Kendrick again took second place (3:29.40) behind Liverpool (3:26.87). Jiak would earn a state meet berth by finishing second in the 600-meter run in 1:21.91 as the winner, Marcellus’ Mike Quercia (1:19.37), tied his own sectional record. Griffin was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles in 6.79 seconds. Back in the girls meet, J-D’s Marae Tearney would win the shot put, tossing it 37 feet 1/2 inch to beat the field by more than two feet. She also just missed a state meet spot in the 55-meter dash, getting third in 7.64 seconds as Corcoran’s Angelice Tearney (7.62) earned that second spot. F-M’s Alyssa Hamel was seventh. Also, Marae Tearney would help the Rams finish fifth in the 4×200 relay, just behind F-M (1:53.94) in fourth place In another relay, the 4×200, Linsay Royer, Liz Pieri, Katy Pieri and Natalie Mannion helped J-D to second place, in 4:10.33, behind only Skaneateles (4:08.51). F-M’s quartet of Molly Levy, Hanna Lee, Audrey Wallace and Isabel Carapella was third in 4:16.65. J-D also was sixth in the 4×800. CBA’s Katie Brislin reached the state meet by earning second place in the 1,500-meter run in 4:52.52, behind only Canastota’s Allison Lasnicki (4:51.17). J-D’s Eileen Cody was seventh. Liz Pieri was third in the 300-meter dash (43.89 seconds), inches from a state meet berth as West Genesee’s Katie Bott (43.78 seconds) got that crucial second spot. Another Red Rams star, Margaret Fuller took third in the high jump, clearing 5 feet 3 inches to meet the qualifying standard right on the number, as Danielle Doss tied for fifth in the pole vault. Avery Share was third in the 1,500 race walk in 10:18.25. Natalie Mannion was fourth in the triple jump (33 feet 9 inches), with CBA’s Betty Etheredge fifth in 33 feet 5 1/2 inches. In the long jump, F-M’s Alex Seabury was fourth, going 16 feet 2 inches, and J-D’s Sierra Vasiliou was fifth (15 feet 9 1/2 inches) and Etheredge ninth.
