Cicero-North Syracuse wrestler Patrick Dyer had made the trip to Albany’s Times Union Center before for the state Division I championship meet. Liverpool’s Derek Eason had not. Dyer and Eason both sought podium finishes among the top large-school wrestlers, though their chances of reaching the top spot faded in Friday’s opening rounds. Dyer, the Section III champion at 130 pounds, engaged in an active opening-round match against Valley Central’s Robert Bailey, breaking open a close match with two late reversals as he beat Bailey 10-5. A few hours later, Dyer ran into Chenango Forks’ Casey Lanave in the quarterfinals and never got a point on the board. An early takedown put Lanave in front, and he added two more of them later in the match to prevail 6-0. Meanwhile, Eason, who won the sectional title at 145 pounds two weeks earlier, met Irvin Buck (Niagara Falls) in the first round. Other than a third-period escape, Eason could not manage a point in a 5-1 defeat to Buck. But Eason would turn things around in the consolation bracket, pinning Niskayuna’s Alex Espina in 1:12 to assure that he would wrestle more on Saturday – just like Dyer. On Saturday, Dyer quickly went out, beaten in the consolation bracket 7-1 by Union-Endicott’s Justin Hyde. Eason, too, would get beat, in a 6-4 decision to Williamsville East’s Jacob Beichner. For the season, Dyer went 28-7, while Eason had a 31-4 mark.
