As if being the top seed for the Section III Class B playoffs wasn’t enjoyable enough, the Westhill boys basketball team got more pleasure from what took place before it even took the court. Both no. 4 seed South Jefferson and no. 5 seed Mount Markham got knocked out in last Tuesday’s opening round — the Spartans falling to Holland Patent, the Mustangs to Clinton. This left no. 8 seed General Brown, who eliminated Sherburne-Earlville 69-63, as the lone single-digit seed left in the Warriors’ half of the bracket going into Friday night’s quarterfinal round. And as it turned out, the Lions posed no threat to a well-rested, confident Westhill squad on its home court as the Warriors laughed its way to a 72-33 victory. Westhill got a chance to show off on the offensive side in the first half, bolting out to a 29-8 lead. Though it couldn’t keep up that kind of pace, the Warriors still kept stretching out the margin to 63-25 before the starters rested in the fourth quarter. J.T. Alcaro, normally a defense-first guard, led with 14 points, while Dan Ross got 13 points and Justin Biles earned 10 points. Nathan Nigolian had nine points as Tom Fisher and Mike McMullen got six points apiece as the Warriors hit on 10 3-pointers before the night was done. In the Class B semifinals Friday at Chittenango High School t 7:45, Westhill will face Holland Patent, who needed overtime to knock out Clinton 65-58. The winner gets Bishop Grimes or Skaneateles in the March 7 sectional final at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
