To get another shot at the Section III Division I championship, the Baldwinsville ice hockey team need not venture beyond Lysander Arena. The Bees finished second in the Division I regular-season standings behind West Genesee, a mark further secured by last Tuesday night’s second-period eruption in a 5-0 road victory over Fayetteville-Manlius. At the Cicero Twin Rinks (where the Hornets have home games), B’ville stayed patient through a 0-0 first period. But the next 15 minutes proved different. Connor Bertrand, Jeff Abbott, Mike McElwain, Greg Gedd and Sam Lane each took turns putting shots past F-M goalie Tyler Palmerton. Dan Briggs, Brett Earle, Parker Ferrigan and Ron Bertrand joined Lane and Gedd in the assist column. Meanwhile, the stunned Hornets could not respond, despite a series of good scoring chances as Mark Miller turned away all 31 shots he faced. In the regular-season finale Thursday night, the Bees lost to Oswego, 2-0, unable to get anything in the net despite a host of chances in the second period and a six-on-three power play in the final two minutes. By winning that game, Oswego clinched the fourth and final Division I playoff spot and left the Bees with a regular-season mark of 13-6-1.
