With solid showings in several weight classes, the Skaneateles wrestling team finished ninth at last Saturday’s Section III Class B championship meet at South Jefferson High School in Adams. Overall, the Lakers had 74 points, a number far below that of Phoenix, whose victory of 274.5 points included wins in seven of the 15 weight classes. Four different Skaneateles wrestlers reached the semifinal round. Jake Carvalho (140 pounds) met the same fate, nearly getting to the title match before taking a 4-3 defeat to South Jefferson’s Casey Hanson. Just as close at 160 pounds, Chris Wise lost to Oneida’s Steve Ellsworth by that same 4-3 margin. Kevin Pembridge did so at 130 pounds, only to fall to Phoenix’s Rowdy Prior in a first-period pin, while Chad Gray (152 pounds) took a second-period pin against another Firebirds star, Caleb Wallace. Both Prior and Wallace went on to win their respective titles. Wise, Gray and Carvalho would recover to win the consolation brackets and take a trio of third-place finishes. Wise did so by pinning Rob Burnett (Hannibal) in 2:30, while Gray prevailed when another Hannibal wrestler, Joel Kinville, took an injury default. Carvalho also got third due to an injury by his teammate, Jake Valentino, who settled for fourth place. Pembridge’s own injury limited him to a sixth-place finish. The top Skaneateles wrestlers are going to Utica Auditorium Saturday for the Section III Division II championships, which start at 10 a.m.
