As another busy week of local boys volleyball played out, Vernon Verona Sherrill would find the win column four times. Amid the busy string, the Red Devils swept past rival Oneida Wednesday night, beating the Indians 26-24, 25-22, 25-21. Though each of the games were close, VVS got all the points that mattered as Aaron Owens and Tyler Curtis each got seven kills, with Curtis adding four blocks. Drew Foster had five kills and five digs. Cole Barbano earned 22 assists as libero Andrew Aurigema got 10 digs. Kyle Renwick and Jake Voelker each got seven digs. Oneida saw Peter Jones scoop up 27 digs to keep points alive as, up front, Shawn Ano had nine kills to go with 12 digs, three blocks and two assists. Kevin Cavanaugh had 11 kills, with Matt Bonville (16 assists) and Neil Parry (11 assists) working on the back line. Sam Adams had seven digs, five kills and three blocks. Prior to that, the Red Devils swept Canastota last Monday night, putting together a 25-21, 25-12, 25-18 victory over the Raiders. This long, busy week culminated for VVS with a match against Little Falls, whom it lost to Jan. 8. The Red Devils got revenge by going through its second five-game match in as many days — and winning it. Twice, VVS went ahead, taking the first game 25-20 and the third game 25-23. Both times, the Mounties rallied, winning the second game 25-20 and surviving all kinds of match points to win the fourth game 31-29. The final game proved just as close — but the Red Devils won it, 25-23. Aurigema, with 21 digs, kept points alive, as did Voelker with 18 digs and Renwick with 12 digs. Barbano dished out 36 assists. On the front line, Owens led with 14 kills, with Foster adding 12 kills and Masi earning 10 kills. The Mounties had just swept Canastota 25-16, 25-20, 25-22, overcoming the work of Dan Avery (eight kills), Charlie Smith 11 (assists) and Matt Avery (18 digs). Oneida’s week began with a four-game loss to Westmoreland 16-25, 25-23, 25-22, 27-25. Westmoreland would then beat Canastota 25-23, 25-18, 28-26, ignoring Avery’s 10 kills and Smith’s 12 assists, as Jamie Meade earned five kills. Chittenango returned on Wednesday night and beat Jamesville-DeWitt in four games.
