Within Jordan Klein’s hands held the chance for the Morrisville-Eaton girls basketball team to knock off archrival Hamilton. The Warriors trailed the Emerald Knights by a single point in last Wednesday night’s game, thanks to Katherine Keever’s basket with eight seconds left. On the ensuing inbounds play, Klein got fouled. So with six seconds to play, Klein went to the line for a one-and-one opportunity. Klein missed the front end — and moments later, Hamilton had escaped with a 49-47 victory. Even though it came into the game with a 6-9 mark, as compared to the Emerald Knights’ mark of 9-4, M-E was not fazed. It stayed fairly close in the first half, notching baskets and only trailing 25-21 when the two sides went to the break. Then the Warriors made its big move, outscoring Hamilton 16-9 in the third period to take a 37-34 lead. Sensing the danger, the Emerald Knights, led by Jordan Peterson (19 points), made its own rally in the final period to take a 46-45 lead. In the last minute, M-E went back in front, 47-46, when Emily Corpin found Shelby Widger for the go-ahead basket, all leading to the final sequence. Aside from Peterson, Katie Weeks had 10 points, Keever got eight points and Jenna Whyatt earned six points. On the Warriors’ side, Abby Clark led with 13 points, with Klein earning 10 points and Corpin getting eight points. Two days before meeting, M-E and Hamilton had varying results, as the Warriors beat LaFayette 50-46 and the Emerald Knights fell to unbeaten Little Falls 46-34. In a non-league contest, M-E trailed for most of the first half, yet turned it around in the third quarter by outscoring LaFayette 15-5 to seize a 34-26 lead. Through an active fourth quarter, the Lancers ate away at the Warriors’ margin, and were within two, 48-46, when Mae Brown was fouled in the game’s waning seconds. This looked to be trouble, since Brown had made just two free throws in 22 attempts all season. At just the right moment, though, Brown came through, hitting both foul shots to clinch the M-E victory. For the night, Brown had seven points, behind Clark, who led with 15 points as Corpin (10 points) also hit double figures. Klein had eight points and Leigha Morris earned six points. For LaFayette, Brenna Murray led with 17 points. As this went on, Hamilton took its shot at 14-0 Little Falls, who was no. 8 in the latest state Class C rankings, and held up well despite the loss. The Mounties steadily worked its way to a 27-17 halftime lead. Despite keeping Little Falls relatively contained in the second half, the Emerald Knights could never mount the run it needed to catch up. Peterson accounted for more than half of Hamilton’s offense, finishing with 22 points, while Weeks had eight points. Olivia Tooley, with 16 points, led a more balanced Little Falls attack — though the Mounties would lose its first game of the season to Dolgeville in overtime the same night Hamilton edged M-E.
