In one of the more memorable chapters of this rivalry, the Oneida girls volleyball team spotted Vernon Verona Sherrill the first two games, yet came back to win in five in last Tuesday night’s Tri-Valley League showdown. A long first game saw both sides get a handful of chances to pull ahead, but the Red Devils prevailed, 33-31, and followed that up by taking the second game 25-20, seemingly seizing control of the match. But the Indians seemed to improve the longer they were on the court. Oneida claimed the third game 25-20, then dominated the fourth game 25-14 to set up a decisive fifth game. The finale reverted back to the opener, without the marathon aspects. It proved close, but at 24-23, Oneida got the match point it needed and prevailed 25-23. Paige Pendleton and Rachael Kline both had 18 kills for the Indians, as Kline added 14 digs. Clare Henry had 22 digs to go with her seven kills, while Melissa Murawski finished with 19 assists and seven digs. On the VVS side, Rachel Brown earned 17 assists, helped on the back line by Stephanie Siriano and her nine assists, eight digs, six kills and three aces. Alexis Albro mixed in 15 digs, four aces, seven kills and four blocks as Liz Bush had eight kills and three blocks. With the win, Oneida improved to 10-4, 9-2 in the Tri-Valley League, while VVS fell to 7-6 (7-4 league).
