Another chapter of the boys basketball “Holy War” between Christian Brothers Academy and Bishop Ludden, and another victory for the Brothers — rather routine, right? Not really — even if it seemed that, through 10 consecutive wins in this series, the Brothers had turned a fierce feud into something a bit tamer, through sheer repetition of success. The 11th in a row over the Gaelic Knights, attained last Tuesday night in a 48-42 decision at Buddy Wleklinski Court, provided a reminder that, were it not for a timely shot or two, fortunes could turn around, regardless of the circumstances of the two sides. CBA appeared to take control in the second quarter, breaking out of a 9-9 tie as, with Troy Bullock and Jameel Balenton leading the offense, it outscored Ludden 17-6 the rest of the half. The routine of past CBA-Ludden games was surfacing once more. What wasn’t routine, though, was the way the Gaelic Knights answered in the third quarter. Paced by John Rooney, who would finish with 14 points, Ludden made up most of the deficit, holding CBA to six points in that period. And when Omar Osbourne hit a basket early in the fourth quarter, the Brothers trailed 35-33. Through all this, CBA stayed calm, and quickly regained the lead. Still, it wasn’t until Bullock hit a key 3-pointer in the game’s final seconds could the hosts relax. Overall, Bullock had 16 points, while Balenton earned a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Greg Thomson contributed nine points and 15 rebounds. Pat Wiese had six points. Safe from Ludden’s clutches for another season, CBA stays at home Friday to face Mexico.
