During the last full week of January, all of the city’s four large high school boys basketball teams met each other, with some interesting results. The biggest news involved Nottingham defending its home court Tuesday afternoon with a 58-52 victory over Henninger, this as Corcoran improved to 11-2 by taking out Fowler 83-59. At 6-5 on the season, Nottingham was still a bit of an underdog to Henninger, who had won the Mayor’s Cup a month earlier at LeMoyne College. But led by 6-7 enter Mabior Mayen, the Bulldogs inched out in front during an active second quarter and built a 40-34 lead on the Black Knights entering the fourth quarter. Mayen continued to flourish on his way to 21 points, but Henninger crawled its way back in the final minutes, forcing Nottingham to get three late points from Cameron Isaac to hang on. Aside from Mayen, Roosevelt Bullock, with 13 points, and Jawan Simmons, with 10 points, hit double figures on the Bulldogs’ behalf. Henninger’s Kavon Delee accounted for nearly half his team’s offense, finishing with 27 points. Corcoran and Fowler raced out of the gate during a 20-20 first quarter before the Cougars, like Nottingham, went out in front in the second quarter and had a 38-33 edge at the break. Gradually, Corcoran pulled away in the last two periods, led by Dewan Bohannon and Riley Stroman as Bohannon earned 20 points and Stroman added 19 points. Algeron Torrence and Brandon Reed each had 11 points. Fowler center Malcolm Jones again had a terrific effort, earning 29 points. They would all move on, none facing a more important game on Friday than Corcoran’s home date with 10-4 Liverpool, a possible Class AA playoff preview.
