A two-hour stream of public comments opened the Camillus Town Board meeting Tuesday Jan. 26, leading the board to publicly state its unanimous opposition to Honeywell’s plan to create a Sediment Consolidation Area at Wastebed 13 in Amboy. After years of cooperation with Honeywell, the town board voted to submit correspondence to the company and the Department of Environmental Conservation stating its disapproval of the plan, which would deposit toxic sediment dredged from the bottom of Onondaga Lake in the wastebed, located just half a mile away from the Golden Meadows housing development. More than 200 Camillus residents, many from the Golden Hills neighborhood, attended the meeting and expressed their concern that Honeywell’s plans would put the entire community in danger. Comments ranged from the scientific to the sentimental, but every resident echoed a strong resistance to allowing a private company to dump toxic waste in the backyards of one of Camillus’ newest residential neighborhoods. Many residents called for the board to “vote no,” to Honeywell’s proposal, but Supervisor Mary Ann Coogan reminded the crowd that no formal proposal has yet been presented to the town. “We can’t say ‘no’ or ‘yes,’ because there’s nothing to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to,” Coogan explained. The draft plan that was presented by Honeywell at a public meeting earlier this month remains in the preliminary stage and has not even been approved by the DEC. But in response to the crowd, the board did agree to formally communicate their disapproval of the plan to the appropriate groups. A second public meeting will be held by Honeywell at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at the New York State Fairgounds. For more on this story, see next week’s Eagle Observer.
