It didn’t concern the Hamilton girls basketball team one bit that Oriskany came to town Friday night sporting an 11-0 record and a no. 5 state Class D ranking. In fact, the Emerald Knights ended up treating the Redskins like a cellar-dweller, using a near-perfect start to take early control and not stopping until it had, by a 57-30 margin, handed Oriskany its first defeat. All it took was eight minutes for Hamilton to pull far away. Through stifling defense, turnovers and easy baskets on the other end, the Emerald Knights had a 19-2 advantage when the first quarter was over. Oriskany would recover a bit, closing within 27-13 by halftime, but Hamilton started the second half strong, too, with a 16-6 run that settled matters. Jordan Peterson finished with 22 points, hitting on a pair of 3-pointers, while Katie Weeks gained most of her 17 points from hitting four 3-pointers. Sara Whyatt contributed 11 points. Christina Graziadai led the Redskins with 10 points. As this went on, Canastota, unbeaten before Wednesday’s defeat to Sherburne-Earlville, took its second straight defeat to Waterville 43-34. They played on even terms in the first half, the Raiders only down 19-18 at the break. All the Raiders could manage in the third quarter was five points, though, allowing the Indians to establish a larger margin. Shea Foster had, by her standards, a quiet evening, as she and Alexis Havens both finished with 10 points. Alicia Hibbard added six points. Lauren Homer led Waterville to victory, earning 14 points. Morrisville-Eaton played hard in a 51-45 defeat to Rome Catholic, though it couldn’t quite recover from the Red Wings taking a 21-11 first-quarter lead. Abby Clark, with 11 points, led the Warriors as Leigha Morris added nine points and Shelby Widger got eight points. Rome Catholic featured Kim Quinn earning 21 points and Samantha Strzepek adding 16 points.
