For the Bishop Grimes girls basketball team, the continued quest for an undefeated 2009-10 season almost got away. The 10-0 Cobras found itself tied with Port Byron going into the fourth quarter Tuesday night, but rode the hot shooting of Amelia Heiselman down the stretch to pull out a 49-38 victory over the Panthers. Port Byron entered the game with a 7-5 record and, playing on its home court, would match baskets with Grimes for much of the night. Neither side started fast, and the Cobras were up 8-6 when the pace quickened in the second quarter and the Panthers went in front for the first time. It took six points from Amanda Marcely to pull Grimes back even, 21-21, going into the break. As Marcely worked her way to 13 points, it stayed tight in the third period, the score going to 33-33 as Port Byron’s home crowd started to increase in volume, sensing an upset. But Heiselman would quiet them. Seeing that the Panthers were using a zone defense, Heiselman flashed open and, three different times, connected on 3-pointers as she would match Marcely’s 13 points. Cady Kalemba added eight points, including a trio of last-minute free throws, while Emma Kelley and Erannan Shattuck had five points apiece. For Port Byron, Nica Dare had 11 points and Alison Short added 10 points.
