A late lead got away from the Canastota wrestling team in the course of Tuesday night’s 33-29 home defeat to the Adirondack Wildcats. The two sides split the opening matches, Canastota getting on the board when Brandon Durfee (135 pounds) shut out Damian Clark 4-0 as Schuyler Jayson (140 pounds) took a 9-3 defeat to Ron Spann. Starting with Tyler Sirota and a 145-pound forfeit, Canastota won four straight matches, and five of six, seemingly taking control. Jeremy Brodfuehrer (152 pounds) beat Nick Mills 3-0. Zach Zupan, named Wrestler of the Week by cnywrestling.com for his 160-pound win in the Richard New Memorial Tournament, outscored Cody Buhler 25-11. And it didn’t stop there, as Sam Farfaglia (171 pounds) routed Kyle Platt 13-2 and, two matches later, Sam Stagnitti (215 pounds) beat Dustin Eaton 5-1. Adirondack would turn it around, though, winning the next two matches with pins to cut the margin to 23-21 before Jake Popple, at 119 pounds, got 46-second pin over James Pugh. Now ahead by eight, 29-21, Canastota simply had to stay on the mat for the last two matches to get the win. However, Jordan Pannell (125 pounds) and Dakota Tucker (130 pounds) both took pins, to respectively, Tyler Spann and Kevin O’Rourke, allowing Adirondack to prevail. As this went on, Morrisville-Eaton kicked off a busy week with a 42-22 defeat to Mohawk.
The Warriors actually won the first two matches, Alex Marris (135 pounds) beating Kyle LaBarge 9-3 and Mike Vreeland (140 pounds) rolling past Dan Gardner 10-1. But the Mohicans won the next four matches prior to Dalton Villnave’s 189-pound battle with Mike Judson. One takedown and one reversal proved enough for Villnave to prevail, 4-1, as the other points came from forfeits to Barney Prince (112 pounds) and Jonathan Metz (125 pounds).
