Going head-to-head for the first time this winter, the Vernon Verona Sherrill boys volleyball team pushed ahead of archrival Oneida, beating the Indians in a three-game sweep on Tuesday night. In each of the first two games, the Red Devils proved steady and consistent, winning them 25-20 and 25-19. Though the Indians made the third game closer, it could not extend the match as VVS finished it off 25-23. Josh Masi led an active VVS front line with eight kills and nine blocks. Tyler Curtis (six kills), Drew Foster (five kills) and Aaron Owens (four kills) helped out, while Cole Barbano picked up 12 assists. On defense, Jake Voelker had 16 digs, with Steve Geer (eight digs) and Kyle Renwick (six digs) helping out. As for Oneida, Shawn Ano produced eight kills, while Travis Morrison earned four kills. Matt Bonville picked up 11 assists and Pete Jones got eight digs. Prior to that, Oneida ran into Westmoreland and took a 25-16, 25-11, 25-22 defeat to the Bulldogs. Ano still had 12 kills, while Sam Adams earned seven kills. Bonville had nine assists. Chittenango also returned on Tuesday, beating Jamesville-DeWitt 19-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-17. After losing the opening game, the Bears gradually took over as Luke Greiner earned 15 assists and six kills. Ryan Smith had a team-best 11 kills as Caleb Mannix (seven kills) and Tom Connelly (six kills) provided front-line help. Corey Rivet added five assists. Canastota broke into the win column Monday night with a four-game decision over Oriskany.
The Raiders rolled through the first two games, 25-17 and 25-18, and after Oriskany claimed the third game 25-21, Canastota dominated the fourth game 25-13 to finish it off. Jake LaBarre had 11 kills and five digs, with Dan Avery putting together 10 kills, four digs, two aces and two assists. C.J. Melander had seven blocks as Matt Avery earned eight assists and three aces. But the Raiders lost Tuesday to Sauquoit Valley 25-17, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20. Marvin Wilke stood out for Canastota with 25 digs as Avery earned six kills, seven aces and six digs. LaBarre and Wilke each had four aces as Ryan Pederson gained four blocks and Charlie Smith finished with five assists.
