With all the attention the Christian Brothers Academy boys basketball team’s showdown with Jamesville-DeWitt is drawing for Friday night, the Brothers nearly got beat ahead of it. The entire affair nearly lost some value when the Brothers were taken to the wire by Fowler Tuesday night, and it took a particular bit of accuracy from Pat Wiese to pull out a 47-46 victory over the Falcons. With time running out in regulation, CBA trailed, 46-44, having blown a huge early lead when it might have started to look ahead to J-D, and forgot about the opponent right in front of them. Now needing something special, the Brothers saw Greg Thomson covered inside — but Wiese flashed open and, with 5.7 seconds left, sank a 3-pointer to push his team back in front. Fowler could not answer. Of course, the reason it was so close was that the Falcons did not panic when CBA raced out to 23-4 first-quarter advantage. Instead, Fowler cut the margin to single digits by the third quarter, then continued to hammer away as the Brothers went cold from the field. Most of Jameel Balenton’s 13 points came early, as Wiese finished with 12 points. Thomson (nine points) and Troy Bullock (eight points) were close behind. Fowler forward Malcolm Jones won most battles in the paint, leading both sides with 19 points.
