With first place in the CNY Counties League National division at stake, the Cicero-North Syracuse wrestling team knew a big effort was needed in Wednesday’s home showdown against Baldwinsville. And the Northstars gave that effort, taking six of the 13 matches on the night — but it wasn’t quite enough in a 33-21 loss to the Bees. Two of the best matches came in the higher weight classes. At 189 pounds, Ariel Anocedo and Pat Nasoni traded points through all six minutes, but Anocedo did a bit more and prevailed by a 19-15 margin. Matt Mastro (215 pounds), with far fewer points, held off Jacob Florack 4-3. By far, the biggest difference in the meet was the fact that, of those six CNS wins, just one came by a pin — when Tony Battista, at 119 pounds, finished off Jacob Norton 24 seconds into the second period. B’ville, by contrast, had three pins — and the final margin was 12 points. Patrick Dyer controlled his 135-pound match, but could only get an 8-1 decision over Nick Jacobs, while Dan Ciciarelli (103 pounds) had the same kind of result, beating Tim Sposato 10-1. James Segars (145 pounds) worked hard for a 3-0 win over Antonio Peck. In other close matches, Andy Osborne (160 pounds) lost to Auggie Zona 8-5, Jake Murdock (112 pounds) took a 7-3 defeat to Joey Shaheen and Alex Barry, at 125 pounds, fell to John Herholzer 12-8. On the same night, Liverpool ran into CNYCL American division leader Corcoran and took a 44-20 loss to the Cougars. Amid a string of Cougar successes, Casey Guilfoil, at 112 pounds, pinned Nadir McCray, while Joe Pizzuto (171 pounds) gained an 8-6 win over Quindell Palmer. Tyler Eason claimed a 119-pound forfeit. Matt Call (145 pounds) lost a 5-2 decision to Emmanuel Chanelo.
