Despite the holiday break — or maybe because of it — local indoor track and field teams made two separate trips to Colgate University’s Sanford Field House for separate Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association meets. In the first of those outings Tuesday, Vernon Verona Sherrill’s girls team picked up 40.5 points to finish sixth in a 12-team field. Rome Free Academy won with 93 points. Elaine Slaven and Kayla Fazekas tied for second in the high jump, with a combined clearance of 9 feet 2 inches. Jenna Fiacco and Melinda Stanton were third in the shot put with combined tosses of 51 feet 10 1/2 inches. Casey Kane and Kerry Miley were fourth in the 600-meter run, with Elaine Slaven and Briana Rascoe fourth in the 300-meter dash. VVS was also fourth in the 1,000-meter run (5:37.04), weight throw and triple jump, fifth in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 55-meter hurdles, long jump and 400-meter dash. Chittenango, who had 26 points, got 10 of them by winning the 1,000-meter run, Jordan Donnelly and Hillary Courtwright combining for a top time of 7:22.56. Hannah Murphay and Becca Sager were second in the mile (12:34.68) as the Bears were also fifth in the 600, 400 and 1,000, and sixth in the 300 and triple jump. Canastota’s Allison Lasnicki won the individual 1,000-meter run in 3:19.62, plus took the 800-meter run in 2:28.30 as she and Francesca Popple prevailed with a combined time of 5:07.70. Oneida saw Kate Vineall and Jennifer Scholl combine for fifth place in the 55 hurdles. On the boys side, Canastota, with 29 points, had the best local effort, taking ninth place, just ahead of Chittenango’s total of 20 points. Canastota’s tandem of Aaron Walker and Zach Szkolnick teamed up to win the mile in a combined time of 9:58.98. Also, Walker and Erick Wells gave Canastota a second-place time of 4:34.54 in the 800-meter run. Chittenango saw John Laplante clear 10 feet and win the individual pole vault. Josiah Durfee and John Durfee gave Chittenango a second-place finish in the 600-meter run in 3:06.91. Bruce Godneck and Jason Given were fourth in the 200-meter dash (1:20.73) as the Bears were also fourth in the 400-meter dash and fifth in the 55-meter hurdles. Oneida’s duo of Tyler Burton and Dan Margo were second in the triple jump, going 75 feet 1/2 inch, and the Indians also took fifth in the high jump.
