Mired in a three-game skid, the Cazenovia boys basketball team found some relief during the holiday break with a win in the Fabius-Pompey Tournament. That came in Monday’s opening round, where the Lakers needed a fourth-quarter push to earn a 41-37 victory over the Homer Trojans. They played on even terms in the first half, Homer going in front before Cazenovia came back and forged a 20-20 tie heading into the break. It stayed a low-scoring, tight affair in the third quarter. Only when the Lakers outscored the Trojans 13-8 in the final period did it go ahead for good. Cody Whiteman led Cazenovia with 10 points. Trevor Smith earned nine points, while Max Kellish gained eight points. Homer’s Aaron Darr led both sides with 11 points. In the championship game one night later, the Lakers met host Fabius-Pompey, who ripped Cincinnatus 62-30 in the other half of the opening round. It proved to be close — but F-P defeated Cazenovia 52-44. Even when the Lakers held the Falcons to just eight points in the second quarter, it could not take full advantage, still trailing 23-20 as they went to the break. F-P more than doubled its margin in the third period, then held on with free throws. Doyle Judge, in defeat, produced 14 points to lead the Lakers as Kellish added 10 points, but no other Laker had more than four points, even though all nine players that saw action got at least one field goal. Sean Emerson led the Falcons with 15 points and seven rebounds. After Cazenovia makes up its snowed-out Dec. 23 game with Skaneateles on Monday, it goes to Westhill on Wednesday and hosts Hannibal on Jan. 8.
