When basketball is the topic among Warriors, Westhill has a decided edge over Hannibal on both sides of the ledger. Both Westhill squads won convincingly in the days leading up to Christmas, starting with the girls as it improved to 6-0 with a 73-38 decision. Westhill set a relentless pace and put together some of its best offensive totals of the season. It outscored Hannibal in every quarter, leading 41-19 by halftime and continuing the quick tempo the rest of the night. Having the best outing of her varsity career, Kathryn Christensen torched Hannibal for 24 points, hitting on 11 field goals. Eighth-grader Anna Ross set her own career mark with 18 points, both of them allowing Emily Haggerty (nine points) to relax a bit. Stephanie Baron had seven points as Maggie Tripodi added six points. Then it was the Westhill boys turn to meet a Hannibal squad far removed from the one that claimed each of the last three Section III Class B titles. Sure enough, Westhill prevailed 78-33, though it didn’t really take control until the second quarter, when it strung together a 24-9 run. The hosts also closed with a 26-5 fourth-quarter blitz, just to be sure. Dan Ross poured in 20 points, while Tom Fisher registered a season-best 15 points and Dan Karleski chipped in with 13 points. Kevin McAvoy had seven points off the bench as Cory Hewitt and Nathan Nigolian got six points apiece. Westhill now heads to the high-profile CBA Bottar-Leone Holiday Classic, where it meets St. Peter’s (Staten Island) in Tuesday’s opening round. The winner will get Syracuse CBA or Albany CBA (who meet in an opening-round rematch of last year’s Class AA regional final) in the finals on Wednesday night.
