Maybe it wasn’t supposed to be this simple — but the Oneida girls volleyball team will gladly take it when it comes to beating its closest rival. The Indians needed just three games to get past Vernon Verona Sherrill Tuesday night, improving its record to 3-1 as the Red Devils fell to 3-2. In this first head-to-head clash of the winter, Oneida survived a tough first game and won it, 25-21. That confidence seemed to carry over into the second game, where the Red Devils rolled to a 25-14 victory. Still battling, VVS made the third game a tight one and had a chance to extend the match, but the Indians converted the late points and won it, 25-22. Rachael Kline had a big night for Oneida, mixing in 15 kills, seven digs, three blocks and two aces. Clare Henry posted eight kills and six digs, while Paige Pendleton earned five kills. Lena Reginelli (four kills) and Candra Connelly (three kills) helped on the front line, too. On the back line, Shannon Dowling had 16 assists, adding three digs and two aces, with Melissa Murawski adding seven assists and Ann Duchene getting four digs. VVS, for its part, had Stephanie Siriano earn five kills, five assists and three digs. Sam Kegebein and Katelyn Bowers each had seven digs, with Alexis Albro earning four kills and five digs and Rachel Brown picking up five assists. Meanwhile, Chittenango’s girls volleyball team went to Christian Brothers Academy and took a 25-17, 25-23, 25-15 defeat to the Brothers. Brittney Tirabassi had 10 kills, with Hayley Calarco getting 12 assists and three kills, but Rose Mashie (four assists) and Jenna Barber (two kills) had quiet outings. Alex Horowitch (18 assists) and Emily Norkett (seven kills) led CBA along.
