Getting a head start in the OHSL Liberty division race, the Jordan-Elbridge wrestling team relied on its competitors in the lighter weight classes to turn around Wednesday’s meet against Marcellus and produce a 39-24 victory. The Mustangs got the jump, bolting out to an 18-0 lead in its season opener. After T.J. Hamilton (171 pounds) claimed a forfeit, Rob Bellucci, at 189 pounds, took a minute to pin Ryan Hubbs, while Aaron Murphy (215 pounds) waited until the end of the first period to earn his pin over Dylan Johnson. All that began to turn at 103 pounds, when J-E’s Trevor Pettit claimed a forfeit, the start of a five-match win streak on J-E’s behalf. Mitch Alpha (112 pounds) claimed the first pin, finishing off Keith McIntosh in 1:39. Mike Nguyen worked hard for a 4-0 decision over Rich Ghezzi at 119 pounds, while Collin Ennulat (125 pounds) pinned Carret Crysler 35 seconds into the third period. Preston Bishop, at 130 pounds, capped the streak by pinning Sam Eberle just before the first-period horn. Marcellus answered with a pair of hard-fought decisions. Matt Dempsey, at 135 pounds, edged past Joe Mills 9-8, while Sam Eberle (140 pounds) beat Kalys Zhumakadyruulu 6-4. Still, J-E led 27-24, and Mitch Cooper’s pin of Matt Marcheterre with 24 seconds left in their 145-pound match built the margin back to 33-24. Jesse Dexter (152 pounds) clinched the Eagles’ win, hanging on in an 11-10 thriller over Grady Ryan, before Eric Gross (160 pounds) topped Grant Hardy 10-7. As this went on, West Genesee’s wrestlers also depended on domination in the lighter weight classes to win its opener over Central Square 40-29 in Camillus. The Wildcats first got on the board in the second match, at 140 pounds, where Mike Young held off the Red Hawks’ Josh Prall 9-6. Two matches later, at 152 pounds, Heitham Wady claimed a forfeit, just before a pair of pins. Evan Stefano (160 pounds) finished off Garrett Claffey in just 1:21, while Nick Marco, at 171 pounds, got his pin over Steve Guerin at the end of the second period. Central Square won the next two matches to move back in front, but the Wildcats’ big push began with its smallest competitor, Logan Dirk, who dominated at 103 pounds, beating Ben Mayers in an 18-1 technical fall. Right after, Ian Collican did the same at 112 pounds, earning a 19-2 technical fall over Ryan Lamson. Connor Grome (119 pounds) needed all six minutes to beat James Williams 4-1, while Jason Heggelke (125 pounds) took just 1:07 to pin Chris Bourassa.
