When Cazenovia’s wrestling team hit the mat for the first time in the 2009-10 season, it left little question as to its intentions to rule in the OHSL Liberty division. In a battle of Laker teams Thursday night, Cazenovia went to Skaneateles and claimed 11 of the 13 matches on its way to a 60-9 victory. Though three of the matches were forfeited – to Cody Foster (189 pounds), Nick Petroff (103 pounds) and Brad Nardella (112 pounds) – Cazenovia still found lots of success in contested bouts. Billy Bigsby, in the 140-pound opener, pinned Matt Sheppard in 3:33. The next four matches were split, with Noah Shephard (152 pounds) edging Chad Gray 5-4 and Dylan Holgate, at 160 pounds, shuttng out Neil Ruggles 4-0. Amid all the forfeits, Matt Staiger wrestled at 215 pounds and pinned Jacob Kipp 14 seconds into the second period. Each of the last four matches ended in pins, too, with Teddy Kugler taking just 17 seconds to finish off his 130-pound opponent, Owen Sheppard. Ryan Cook, at 119 pounds, pinned Tyler saunders 39 seconds into the third period. Jose Wells (125 pounds) earned his fall over Ryan Dick in 3:37, and Adam Lockwood (135 pounds) pinned Jake Valentino midway through the third period. Two days later, Cazenovia found itself at the Morrisville-Eaton Dual Meet with three other visitors — Vernon Verona Sherrill, East Syracuse-Minoa and Cooperstown. And the Lakers would go 3-1, beating ESM 58-24, the hosts from M-E 58-21 and Cooperstown 41-15, but falling to VVS by a narrow 32-31 margin. In the match against the Red Devils, Nardella, moving down to 103 pounds, took 29 seconds to pin Erick Faherty, while Kugler pinned Aaron Pritchard in 59 seconds. Wells got a second-period pin over John Hudson as Petroff, moved to 96 pounds, beat Kasey Proper 9-3. Cazenovia won three straight matches in the middle weights, as Lockwood (140 pounds) edged Nathan Walts 5-4, Dylan Perry (145 pounds) beat Dave Rathbun 11-6 and Shephard rolled past James Simpkins 10-1. Bigsby dropped a 15-14 classic to Alex Gilbert. Following this busy start, Cazenovia had just one meet in the next 12 days — a Thursday visit from Solvay/Westhill — before appearing Dec. 18 and 19 at the Tri-Valley Tournament in Whitesboro.
