As a program accustomed to finding glory on the mat, the Baldwinsville wrestling team expects to generate some more memories in 2009-10. From last year’s squad, Section III Division I 215-pound champion Kyle Sheridan graduated. But Anthony Finocchiaro, the 112-pound champion and a two-time state tournament participant, is back for his sophomore campaign and another chance at glory. B’ville kicked off its season last Wednesday at Rome Free Academy, and had to dominate the lower weight classes to pull off a 38-31 victory over the Black Knights. RFA won all four matches from 160 to 215 pounds, but the Bees made up for it by claiming three different matches by forfeit — to Finocchiaro at 130 pounds, to Vito Caloia at 112 pounds, and to Kurt McArdell at 145 pounds. On the mat, B’ville won four times. Tim Sposato, at 103 pounds, pinned Tyler Christman in 2:59, while Nick Jacobs (135 pounds) took two more seconds and finished off Josh Knapp in 3:01. Joe Senf, at 152 pounds, had a third-period pin over James Yates as John Herholzer (125 pounds) earned a crucial decision, edging Mike Madonia 8-6. Pat Nasoni lost his 171-pound match to Dan Secor 11-6. B’ville is on the mat again next Tuesday to face Liverpool, a key early-season CNY Counties League match, especially after the Warriors beat Fayetteville-Manlius 39-31 in its opener. The Bees then visit F-M next Thursday and compete in the General Brown Dual Meet on Dec. 12 – in all, three competitions in a five-day span.
