Six runners from Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool went to SUNY-Plattsburgh last Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet — and they all came home winners. Aside from the team championships decided in all five classes, there was also a separate competition where the five top individuals from each section raced against each other, with team awards handed out at the end. In both instances, Section III won the Class AA event. On the boys end, it was particularly one-sided, as Section III’s runners picked up 165 points, well ahead of Section I, who was second with 326 points. CNS senior Chris Buchanan worked his way into the top 10 of the individual race, covering the 3.1-mile Plattsburgh course in 15 minutes, 45.3 seconds to finish eighth. North Rockland’s Nick Hughes won in 15:26.3. Two Liverpool seniors helped out, too, as senior Alex Wilke earned 17th place in 15:59.6 and Anthony Brais finished 35th in 16:17.7. Together, Buchanan, Wilke and Brais offered the support to Baldwinsville’s Shaun Thompson and West Genesee’s Steve Houghmaster, who finished third and fourth, respectively. Later, as the rain fell in Plattsburgh, the girls Class AA runners took their turn — and once again, Section III finished in front, with 125 points to Section II’s runner-up total of 217 points. CNS freshman Nicole Watterud had a solid showing, working her way to 26th place in a time of 18 minutes, 23.4 seconds. Liverpool senior Lesley Bowers ran to 40th place in 18:49.1, just ahead of another Northstars freshman, Marissa Colburn, who finished 48th in 19:02.9. Waterrud, Bowers and Colburn joined two young stars from West Genesee, eighth-grader Laura Leff (who finished ninth) and freshman Anna Leo (who was 61st) on the winning side — and this on top of Fayetteville-Manlius winning both state Class AA titles.
