Wherever one turned in the pool during the Section III girls swimming championship meets at Nottingham High School, there was a competitor from Christian Brothers Academy doing something great. Without question, the Brothers took complete ownership of the sectional meet, distancing itself from Fayetteville-Manlius and the rest of the pack in the team standings and qualifying 11 swimmers for the Nov. 20-21 state meet at Webster Schroeder High School near Rochester. First, CBA claimed the Class A team crown on Thursday night, with 507 points to F-M’s total of 268 points. It included wins in both the 200 freestyle (1:42.17) and 400 freestyle (3:46.67) relays and a sweep of the top three positions in the 200 freestyle by Maggie Fletcher, Ruthie Speidel and Destiny Cerlanek. As if that wasn’t enough, CBA went first (Summer Schmitt), third (Zoe McCauley) and fourth (Cerlanek) in the 100 butterfly, while Kathryn Coughlin (1:08.07) and Michelle Damico (1:09.42) go 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke. That set the table for Saturday’s overall sectional final, where the Brothers and Hornets both put up some fine performances. To start it, Schmitt, Coughlin, Cerlanek and Aubrey Letourneau sped to a time of 1:51.24 in the 200 medley relay. F-M also qualified for the state meet as Hadley Cameron-Carter, Melissa James, Alex Murphy and Delaney Pfohl took second place in 1:53.57. Then Fletcher and Speidel went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle, Fletcher prevailing in 1:59.48, just ahead of Speidel (2:00.15) as McCauley (2:01.52) claimed fourth place and Cerlanek took fifth. Coughlin was second in the 200 individual medley (2:17.84) as F-M teammates James and Pfohl were third and fourth, respectively. CBA’s Juliette Wetzel was second in the 50 freestyle in 25.32 seconds, and Emily Wanamaker took the same spot in diving with 416.65 points, also qualifying for the state meet. Then it was another 1-2 finish, Schmitt winning the 100 butterfly in 59.89 seconds and McCauley getting second place in 1:02.16. Cameron-Carter saw all this and finally gave F-M partisans a victory in a tense 100 backstroke. At the wall, Cameron-Carter posted 1:00.51, just 0.01 seconds better than New Hartford’s Abigail Max (1:00.52), this after she had placed third in the 100 freestyle in 54.56 seconds. And the winning continued for CBA, too. Speidel needed 5:15.73 to pull away from the field in the 500 freestyle, and Coughlin (1:07.43) won the 100 breaststroke over James (1:09.37), with Damico in third place. CBA would sweep all the relays, too. In the 200 freestyle relay, Wetzel, Letourneau, Coughlin and Fletcher improved to 1:41.56, and in the 400 freestyle relay Schmitt, Speidel, Wetzel and Fletcher won again in 3:41.04, more than five seconds better than the Class A meet. Amid all this, Jamesville-DeWitt finished second in the Class B team event behind New Hartford. Molly Hair was second in the 200 IM (2:23.03) and Katie Coyne third (2:23.34), with Coyne also second in the 100 butterfly (1:02.97) and Hair third in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.65). Elsewhere for the Red Rams, Jilly Rippon was third in the 100 butterfly (1:05.05) and Katie Comanici fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:42.46). Finally, Manlius-Pebble Hill contended in Class C, as Lisie Andersson won the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:36.83 after a fifth in the 100 freestyle. Carley Bright was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:12.19 and fourth in the 100 backstroke.
