Hamilton’s girls soccer team, taken out in the Section III Class D quarterfinals a season ago, wanted to go beyond that realm — but could not quite pull it off. And Morrisville-Eaton would meet that same fate on the same day in the Class C-2 bracket. After its first-round win over Old Forge fueled by Emily Truett’s hat trick, the Emerald Knights went to Thursday’s Class D quarterfinal against no. 5 seed Poland, who took out Brookfield 5-1 in the opening round. Looking to improve on what happened in 2008, Hamilton gave a full effort — but could not get on the board in a 2-0 loss to the Tornadoes. If ever a goal in the early going proved decisive, it may have happened here. Poland’s Ashley Huckabone pushed a shot past Emerald Knights goalie Jordan Peterson less than three minutes into the game, and the Tornadoes would not get caught. Peterson stood up well, recording 15 saves to keep her team in it. Every time Hamilton pushed, though, it kept getting turned back by Poland’s defense as its goalie, Jordyn Gauthier, recorded 10 saves. Erin Baston tacked on a second-half goal as the Emerald Knights’ season concluded with a 12-5 mark. As this went on, Morrisville-Eaton, the no. 8 seed in Class C-2, went up against top seed Bishop Ludden in the C-2 quarterfinal round in Geddes — and also got eliminated, beaten by the Gaelic Knights by that same 2-0 margin. Unlike Hamilton, the Warriors stayed even with Ludden for a long time. All through the first half, and much of the second half, the Gaelic Knights controlled the flow of play, forcing M-E’s defense into extra duty. Somehow, the game remained 0-0, because M-E goalie Kim Horton was spectacular, finding all kinds of ways to turn back shots on her way to 20 saves. Each of the Warriors’ rare chances were good ones, but Ludden goalie Meaghan McGrath made four strong saves. Eventually, all of the Warriors’ defensive work took a toll, and Ludden broke through late in regulation. Ashley Cianfriglia and Grace Rooney scored, helping Ludden advance to face Beaver River in the C-2 semifinals as M-E finished with a mark of 7-10.
