Here, for the Westhill and Marcellus boys soccer teams, was the last chance to get a serious measurement — and also make forgivable errors — before the Section III Class B playoffs got underway. And it was the Mustangs that would leave the scene happy, converting twice in the second half to break a long deadlock and beat the Warriors 2-0. That win, combined with Skaneateles shutting out Phoenix 9-0, meant that Marcellus would share the OHSL Liberty division regular-season drown with the Lakers — though Skaneateles had the tie-breaker, having gone 1-0-1 in head-to-head meetings with the Mustangs. With its strong late-season push, Marcellus has risen to no. 4 in the state Class B rankings, but Westhill had been just as good, knocking off Skaneateles Oct. 9 to reenter the league race. So it made sense that the two sides would play to a 0-0 standstill in the first half. Marcellus had more attacks, but the Warriors’ defense did not crack, and Ryan Boyle made some nice stops on his way to nine saves for the night. Marcellus kept probing, though, and in the second half broke though. Tom Glose and Mark Schmidt both struck for unassisted goals, and that would prove more than enough, given the way the Mustangs were playing on the other side of the ball. Led by Ben Bednarski, Joe Garrant and Mike Tao, the Mustangs’ back line frustrated Westhill all night, holding them to just five shots, each of which Jon Quick would grab. Back on Monday night, Westhill (11-4-1) toyed with Phoenix, dousing the Firebirds 7-1 as it scored three times in the first half and kept on attacking, even though the game was well in hand. Andrew McBride and Kyle Hunt each scored twice, with McBride adding an assist. Anthony Scaravillo picked up one goal and one assist as John Emm and Jeff Dimond also took turns scoring. Aaron Hunt and Keegan Lounsbery earned one assist apiece.
