Bishop Ludden’s girls soccer team took aim at Tully last Wednesday night, knowing a victory could mean a piece of the OHSL Patriot division regular-season championship. And though the Gaelic Knights could not quite pull it off, its 0-0 tie with the Black Knights was still a good sign of how effective the team could be with the Section III Class C playoffs looming. Since the teams knew each other well from a previous meeting on Sept. 24 (Tully won that time), the rematch saw a lot of control asserted from the defensive sides. Ludden, in particular, proved effective in slowing Tully down, holding them to just four shots through 80 minutes of regulation, plus overtime. This gave the Gaelic Knights a lot of time to attack and get a chance to pull in front. The Black Knights proved just as tough on the defensive side, though, as Carly Jones stopped all seven shots she faced. By contrast, Ludden goalie Meaghan McGrath had to make just three saves. This followed, by two days, Ludden’s 3-0 shutout of Pulaski, where it took 18 shots and got all of its goals in the first half. Kim Balla, Catie Graf and Ashley Cianfriglia each found the net, with Bella Knapp adding an assist. On the boys end, Ludden, who sits at no. 5 in the state Class C rankings, survived a long, drawn-out battle with Bishop Grimes to win 1-0 in overtime on Thursday night. Through 80 minutes of regulation and one 10-minute OT period, the Gaelic Knights and Cobras remained in a 0-0 deadlock, both sides getting great efforts in the net. Ludden goalie Kelly Beaudoin had 10 saves, the same as Grimes counterpart Matt Viel. But in the second OT, the Gaelic Knights broke the tie, Jared Littlejohn finding Tyler Young as Young flicked a shot past Viel to win it and improve Ludden’s overall record to 13-2-1.
